A new nonprofit entity will assume ownership and management of OU Medical System hospitals sometime this fall, University of Oklahoma officials said Friday.
OU Medicine Inc. is a partnership between OU and the University Hospitals Authority and Trust, a state agency charged with advancing excellence in medical research, education and care.
The OU Board of Regents approved agreements with OU Medical Inc. needed to restructure the university's affiliation with its teaching hospitals during a special meeting Friday on the OU Health Sciences Center campus.
"It's not the final action," President David Boren said. "This is just a step along the way. It's an important milestone, but it's not the final closing agreement."
Anil Gollahalli, OU's vice president and general counsel, said the trust will take its own action in the next few weeks.
Documents for the transaction also must be approved by the Oklahoma attorney general, the Oklahoma Contingency Review Board and others, Gollahalli said.
In the meantime, OU will be preparing for the hand-off from the current operator of the system's hospitals, the for-profit Nashville, Tennessee-based Hospital Corp. of America, he said.
