More than 8,500 freshmen will begin their college careers Monday at Oklahoma's two flagship universities.

A record 13,000 new students applied to Oklahoma State University in Stillwater and more than 4,000 of them were welcomed to the Cowboy family Friday at New Student Convocation, spokesman Gary Shutt said.
A major focus will be to retain those freshmen next year and through graduation, said Mitch Kilcrease, associate vice president for student affairs.
Each fall "the campus comes alive" with the arrival of the students and the excitement and energy they bring, Kilcrease said.
As director of the OSU Student Union, he sees most of them.
"It's an incredibly busy building. Statistics show every student that comes to school here visits us three to five times a week," Kilcrease said. "So many things are happening here."
